Any Spyra fans like to proffer an opinion on the Namlook/Spyra 'Virtual vices'? The realaudio stream on the fax page wasn't working well for me, but certainly didn't sound like what I expected (which I guess was smooth warm tones + some spaciness or jazz inflections). I've become hooked on Spyra's stuff so I'm torn on this one. It's probably too early to ask, but anyone heard Air 4 yet? For reference, I really liked Air 3 and the earlier tracks on the various Fax comps seemed ok. Already Im thinking of those gorgeous ambient soaked pieces that often sit next to his more upbeat stuff. It also reminds me of Aphex's stuff by the title though I doubt it will be similar in style - if it is that can only be good in my book. rA ps: Redeye, I knew he was good ages ago so nah nah! :) See my review at 2350! shameless egotist that I am not. Ok, so how about some impressions of Waiting for snow? Still would like anybody else's opinion of Virtual Vices (like I said the realaudio actually put me off). While it's always great to hear audio streams for yourself, I've always liked seeing people's opinions. And over time you learn who's got similar tastes to your own and can share that exultation of finding a great cd from nowhere. It'd be a shame if only Noah posts reviews to the list. Sounds good... I love that frozen chill a la Biosphere, or (my personal favourite) the Meltwater track from the Biosphere/HIA collab that's all environmental sounds of a glacier or something. Some of my favourite frozen (or at least, very very still) moments actually occur on the Jet Chambers, but I'm not real fond of the rest of those cds. I'm sure that for some, that's heresy (oops). thanks / alan Stewart Fritz said: On Wed, 3 Mar 1999 Alan.Singh@HEALTH.GOV.AU wrote: > Ok, so how about some impressions of Waiting for snow? If you haven't yet gotten a copy of this disc, I suggest you run, not walk to your closest FAX distributor and pick it up. I speak in hyperbole only because I think it's warranted in this instance..."Waiting for Snow" ranks near the top of the list of great Fax titles. Frosty, icy...sometimes I think this disc was mis-titled. The snow has already arrived on many of these tracks. This disc sounds like the bastard child of "Organic Cloud" and the album Autechre could have made after "Incanabula" with some late-model Biosphere muddying the genepool. Gorgeous ambience gives way to crunchy beats, which eventually dissolve back into shimmering chords...One of my all time favorites, and it's only a few months old. - --S2 - -- stewart fritz...... fax +49-69/450464 reviews... http://www.2350.org/ "soon i will begin to float" - --- + To post: ; to mail a person: + To unsubscribe: "unsubscribe" to + Online info at: www.faxlabel.com www.hyperreal.org/fax www.2350.org ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Mar 1999 17:29:54 -0600 From: Jeffrey Smith Subject: (fax) Air IV Air IV: Elle A Du Shell Peter once again manages to make things fresh, while at the same time keeping the 'feel' of the series intact. The first phrase that comes to mind when listening to this record is probably "space age bachelor pad." This is probably the 'lounge-iest' record I've ever heard from Peter. (and I've certainly heard my share) From the piano bar sounds of the title track, to the provocative sax on 'Sex-au-phone,' this album is what one might refer to as 'smooth.' Now, there is a definite "been hanging out quite a bit with Klause" old school polyrhythmic spaceyness at work here too. (i.e. On Her Way In & Out) And of course, the lovely French voiceover starts us on our journey . (La nuit tous nos reves approche) A wonderful record all the way around. I'm still leaning a bit toward Air III as the best in the series, but I have a feeling this record is going to grow on me. Lush, extended pads (i.e. Ambient Comp 2) coupled with some pleasant 'four on the floor' fun... All with that underproduced, lo-fi sound that so many early Fax records have. With the exception of 'New York, 25th of November 2089,' this album sounds as if it could have been released in '93. (which is not a bad thing by any means) The aforementioned track journeys a bit into abstract, hip hopland, setting it apart from the rest of the record. If you're a fan of the 'old school' Fax sound, you'll probably enjoy this album...
