This past weekend, I added a page to the 2350.org site listing FAX titles by genre, based on Rowland's breakdown that he posted here some time ago. http://www.2350.org/genre.shtml I'd like to invite everyone on the list to help classify the unclassified titles, and also to comment on any classifications that they don't agree with...the lines between genres are arbitrary, and I know that we all don't take the same things away from the same titles...so Stew and I would love to have more input on the matter. I'll start by suggesting that we need an "Ambient Dub" genre, to include Psychonavigation, the Transonic series, and possibly the I.F. titles. Wechselspannung 2 -- AMBIENT Create 2 -- AMBIENT I think there should be sub categories separating out the beatless ambient from the ambient w/ beats, I think some of the ambient with beats stuff would fit into your proposed 'Ambient Dub' section and I think putting Psychonavigation in there is an excellent idea. You may also want an "electro" type category that I think stuff like some of the Namlooks would fit into and the DSOTM 3-7 would fit there, DSOTM 1 & 2 are more experimental I think. Recurring Dreams of the Urban Myth should be ENVIRONMENTAL AMBIENT not experimental, although I can see a case for either but I think of it more as environmental. Instead of genre groups, i myself use a system of symbols to describe what the disc sounds like. So next to Transonic i have a symbol for Ethno and a symbol for Dub, among others (haven't looked in a while). I have a bunch of little symbols for each characteristic or feature of the music that belongs. Some of the features might be: Whether the music is "dark" or "light" (or both) Is it Beatless? If not, what kind of beat? i have different symbols for each style (house, trance, DnB, Dub, etc)... So i list the albums, and then place next to each album the icon or symbol for the features on that album. This works a lot better then categories particularly for albums that are pretty diverse in sound. I've probably got around 20 different symbols that i use so far. Ambient with beats kind of implies Trance to me. I wonder if there is some kind of formal classification system? Maybe we could just apply standardised adjectives to each CD and then try to draw lines between broadly similar categories of disc... maybe a bit too formal. But maybe saying Weschelspannung 2 should go in the same category as Shades of Orion 2 is a little misleading :) Speaking of which, SoR 2 has been my "music to revise to" for the last couple of days. Top idea! A very appropriate use of icons I feel. In this way you could also have a "find similar" function which looks for other discs with a similar set of icons - then the purpose of categorisation is fulfilled too. Hmm! The other third (or so) is really quite good. However, you'll find supplies of "Shades Of Orion 1" to be quite rare these days, as it has long since passed into the realm of the FAX Collector's Hall Of Fame with the likes of "Ambient Otaku," "I.F. 1," and "2350 Broadway 1." - -Gary H- ghenders@gary-hendershot.com Houston, TX USA - --- + To post: ; to mail a person: + To unsubscribe: "unsubscribe" to + Online info at: www.faxlabel.com www.hyperreal.org/fax www.2350.org ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 06 Apr 1999 11:55:45 +0100 From: Rowland Atkinson Subject: (fax) FAX trade Ive got mint copues of both Whole Traffics by the Basalt Boys and a copy of Virtual Vices by Namlook/Spyra. Have a good Easter out there... Recommended week commencing 29/3/99 : Without a doubt the release of the year so far is PETE NAMLOOK XIV:Solarized cd. Something of a surprise package this is a milestone = in the FAX colossus of releases as sees an apparent shift in direction = for the label. Deeply resonant, immensely percussive, this is a joy to = hear. Almost trance-like, but no trace of boredom factor, the movement is spacey - pacy on occasions - yet confined within a specified area of beats and rich tones. Vague references hint at Tangerine Dream's = crisp production, though this disk would sit nicely next to some of Bill Leeb's latest projects such as Equinox and Pro Tech, whilst achieving the commercial edge of Delerium without resorting to soft-washed = vocals or chanting. Pure hynotic electronic genius. Having neglected to mention Raster/Noton's 20:2000 series the first = two releases by KOMET:01 and ILPO VAISANEN:02 were sat side by side with Komet only slightly coming out on top, if only because we're always recommending Pan Sonic to you! Komet are an unknown entity, and with = the series' conceptual packaging (clear plastic slipcases, shaped like = the top of a keyhole, or possibly an omega sign?) am still none the = wiser, but their tonal experience is definitely from the same Pan Sonic minimalist school. Through twenty minutes (all the 20:2000 cd's will = be twenty minutes long, issued at the end of the month up until year = 2000. Get it?) percussive tones bristle. The odd sequential click breaks through to move the four pieces slowly forward, this is both = stimulating and yet ultimately relaxing. Of course this and it's companions are limited and will be highly collectable... Hopefully the 12 cd package being put together by the label will enlighten as to who Komet are? To finish up this week are two re-releases, both by artists who have left us some of the most creative electronic work in the last couple = of decades and both who never really had their potential pushed to the = fore to spark a larger audience... PSYCHE could so easily have hit the heights with Depeche Mode, et al, not with the disk we have here Insomnia Theatre, but later works were full of emotive, powerful = radio songs from a singer whose energy was boundless. Insomnia was their = debut back in 1982, containing 8 pieces of theatrically inspired, = gore-filled, sequence-driven, driller-killer tunes with titles like Mr Eyeball = Ooze, Maggots, Children Carry Knives, Brain Collapse... Fuelled by a love = of written and visual horror these songs may at first seem basic; = seemingly endless sequences and distorted rhythms surge, but Darrin's = aggressive lyrical content, plus his ability to actually SING (a rare thing in those days) take this set beyond the likes of 242, FLA, Ministry, et = al, who led the scene at the time. The addition of Why Should I, an angst-ridden pop song if ever there was one highlights the talent of this duo beyond compare, and there's also an extra 6 tracks too from = the original. The late D.Goettel of Puppy was a member, very very = briefly, but his input was of no consequence to the two Canadian Huss = brothers. It's good to know Darrin is still out there making music because if = ever a musician deserved success it's him, but if you'd like a taste of = The Word Made Flesh then delve into his first 'take' Insonia Theatre... The world heard the name CLOCK DVA via the paranoia of the Jeffrey Dahmer killings and Buried Dreams is the album he possessed. Ignore = that fact, it truly isn't relevant. Whilst Buried Dreams was not the = band's finest moment, that lay in Man Amplied a little later, this is the = album that everyone wanted to partake in. The seductive, inpenetrable sound = of DVA is evident throughout, not quite honed to perfection, but tracks such as Sound Mirror, The Reign and The Hacker are huge statements. A wall of instrumentation surrounds with minimal input and Adi Newton's dark spoken vocal style datastreams endlessly through. Imagine a = version of Underworld you could not dance to and that's Clock DVA, there is movement but it's more a stimulus for the head rather than the body. Buried Dreams lies in that void between dance music and = experimentalism, a rare thing, and let's thank god it exists. - -- Carbon.disks PO Box 28 Cromer Norfolk NR27 9RG UK Credit Card Tel/Fax Line: +44 (0)1263 515963 http://www.carbondisks.ndirect.co.uk email: data@carbondisks.ndirect.co.uk Carbon.disks stock new and secondhand electronica : alternative : indie : mainstream =A335+ in stock CD's go anywhere in the world postfree PLEASE NOTE: Following a large number of orders not being taken after reservations having been confirmed goods will only be held for a = MAXIMUM of 3 days in UK and 7 days overseas "Carbon.disks, p.o. box 28, cromer, nr27 9rg, uk" 1/4/99 Additional to Supplement 2.01 (New stocks Mar-Apr 99) Terms & Conditions see catalogue 2.00 (e.&.o.e.)
