Hi, If you have a strong opinion on the quality of this title, please convey it to me - public or private as you wish. I'm particularly interested in what sort of settings and moods this music might be good for, and whether it contains any of those sort-of uninspired Namlook moments. cheers, brett - --- + To post: ; to mail a person: + To unsubscribe: "unsubscribe" to + Online info at: www.faxlabel.com www.hyperreal.org/fax www.2350.org ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jun 1999 10:15:36 -0500 From: "Damon C. Capehart" Subject: (fax) Latest Purchases, Part I Well, I just got 8 new FAX CDs: Silence III Air IV Dark Side VII Dark Side VIII S.H.A.D.O 2 Phonehead Sferics Sultan - Osman. So far I've only listened to Silence III enough to give it a review: First of all, I miss the real VOICE of Silence. While the VOICE does make a few appearances, he tends to be in the background most of the time, whispering. I prefer the up front VOICE of "Omid/Hope" and "Life / Death". Here's a breakdown: 1. Into the Desert - Think "Shutov Assembly" + a great Arabian trumpet/sax (or whatever it's really called) solo wailing over it. The best on the album, IMO. 2. Mirage - Slow string ambience a la "Life/Death", plus a few sci-fi phaser blasts and whooshes thrown in for good measure. Obviously shorter than "Life/Death", so not as much building up. It's just more or less there. Still good though. 3. Ship on a Sea of Sand - This is almost like taking a single element from a number of Silence songs and combining them together. Minimal ethnic percussion, spacy sounds, and just a bit of the VOICE thrown in for good measure (sounds like samples from "Life/Death" thrown in with the whispering). 4. Lost City - Lush string interlude. I like. 5. Stars - The VOICE shows up in the background again. Another "Life/Death" edit. 6. Bottom of the Ocean - OK... this is where we flash back to "Omid/Hope". Looped, not-as-constantly-there strings, the cool high-pitched analog synth solo over the string section loop. 7. Dream Time - Minimal single-keyboard noodling. So, on a scale of 1 to 10, where both Silence I & II are 9's, this one gets a 7.5 (0.75 off for lack of originality, 0.75 off because the VOICE whispers and therefore lacks the sheer PRESENCE that he had on the first two). I added about a dozen reviews a few weeks ago, but was too beat to actually update the main page. Whoops! Anyway, hopefully I will be able to finish the last (incomplete) update and get a new one on this weekend...how life has gotten in the way of 2350.org! :) - -w. - -- Warren Lapham laps@2350.org FAXlabel reviews : http://www.2350.org/ - --- + To post: ; to mail a person: + To unsubscribe: "unsubscribe" to + Online info at: www.faxlabel.com www.hyperreal.org/fax www.2350.org ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jun 1999 12:26:50 -0500 From: RecuRsion Subject: (fax) CDs worth? Capehart" Subject: (fax) Latest Purchases, Part II Dark Side of the Moog VII - Obscured By Klaus, Parts 1-6 - 50:00 A little shorter than the others, and even then, it stretches out a bit. [Aren't most FAX releases? :-) ] It's still quite good, though. Almost as good as DSotM V (my personal fave). The breakdown: Part 1 (4:59): Namlook (?) starts us off with a nice dark sequence, which provides Klaus with the basis for his deep Klaus-y chords to enter. The sequence gradually becomes more intense and rhythmic as the chords continue and eventually fade as we segue into... Part 2 (7:22): The sequence continues, crescendos, and the percussion loop enters. As good as any of the DSotM trancey numbers (like DSotM V, part 3, but w/out Laswell). Part 3 (18:58): Ambient and soundscapey. This is where the stretching out is. It is quite nice, though. As 18:00 approaches, the swquence from the end of Part 1 / beginning of Part 2 slithers up from behind every so sneakily and into... Part 4 (6:34): ...A variation on Part 2, modulating some, and with brighter analog tones (think "BWOYYYY!"), then back to a more faithful rendition of Part 2, and then the brighter tones over the faithful Part 2. I like. Part 5 (3:42): Mellotron-ish interlude. Nice, as far as mellotron interludes go. Part 6 (8:09): Ambient and soundscapey - a bit darker than Part 3, plus a bit of piano to give the finale a nice, sad color. Score: With DSotM V being a 10, this is a 9 (for brevity only). I also came across a copy of "Gorn" for $3.99. But unfortunately, when the hired help went to pull the disc from behind the counter, it was nowhere to be found... I *love* this release. Very different than the first two, but refreshing in its approach. A *lot* more going on to engage the listener, while still evoking an atmosphere. The first track "Morning Light" I think is my favorite Namlook track, with the telephone receiver signal and "submerged" car alarm touches of genius. A "must-have" in my opinion...
