Capehart" Subject: (fax) Latest Purchases, Part IV Sultan - Osman -- Burhan Ocal & Pete Namlook (No, I'm not even going to attempt to use those weird character symbols). Word to the curious: I don't own the original Sultan yet, so my impressions cannot vouch for the originality of the recording. I like this album quite a bit. Very interesting, with about 75% of the noises from Burhan's body and instruments, and the rest from Namlook. Part 1 - 4:58: Starts out well, with Namlook's legato Moog sounds. Bass enters, and you >know< it's going to be good. At 2:20, Burhan enters with his Turkish guitar, and you know it's going to be >great<. Part 2 - 8:34: Lots o' acoustic percussion. A lot of emphasis on the kettle drums (Kos). At 3:20, Burhan plays a funky squeaky-rubber-door noise to prepare us for Namlook's re-entrance. At about the same time, we also hear vocal chanting. This various instruments fade one-by-one until someone starts speaking something foreign. Part 3 - 5:46: Mostly a sitar (?) solo. Namlook takes over only for the coda. Percussion then intruduces us to... Part 4 - 11:41: The Fat Boys of Turkey! :-) Actually, it's just Burhan adding some vocal percussive noises to his other percussion. Namlook then adds some old-school techno melodies to it. At 3:00, a vocal incantation induces a 180 degree turn to another Turkish guitar thing. The vocals continue, then herald yet another change of pace. Burhan accompanies some of his softer percussion with some more Fat Boys, and at 8:45, Namlook's old-school is back in session. At 10:30, you think the song has ended, but the track number hasn't changed yet as the solo Turkish guitar closes out the song. This could easily have been Parts 4 through 6 or 7, but heck, I like it anyway. Part 5 - 9:39: Starts out minimal, like Part 1 but softer. At 3:10, another foreign speaker tells us all the meaning of life, but again it remains a secret among those who speak the language. Percussion slowly enters over Namlook's sequence. At 7:37 Burhan vocalizes his percussion again, but it's much more subdued. Part 6 - 1:02: Solo acoustic guitar interlude. Part 7 - 5:54: Very melodic mix of guitars and percussion. Little or no sign of Namlook from what I can hear. Very good. 9.5 out of 10. Capehart" Subject: (fax) Latest Purchases, Part V Air IV - Elle a du Shell Note for the curious: I do not yet have Air III, but that is being arranged. :-) 1. La Nuit...: Judging from the introduction, this opening track could easily have been an outtake from Sultan if it weren't for the French aspect. Other than the introductory aspects, though, this is definitely Air material. At a couple of points, I hear a sample of glissando guitar that might be from a Hawkwind track somewhere. 2. Clearing Your Head: Low droning and Swamp noises accompanied by occasional obscured and backwards droning female voice. 3. On Her Way In: Ambient trance with some 4otF. Very danceable. At about 4:45, a bit of an old-school melody comes in. Good trance. 4. Elle a du Shell: This is WEIRD. What the heck are the voices saying? This title track is >very< dorky, and tongue-in-cheek to be sure. It's like Namlook is really trying to ridicule the French stereotype. 5. Synthetique Be-Bop: Eep! This track is almost as weird as the preceding one! Sounds like something Patrick Moraz might have recorded in his more disco-days. 6. Sex-au-phone: The highlight of the album. Great saxamaphone by Robert Sattler over a perfectly ambient accompaniment. 7. On Her Way Out: This is most like the original Air. Also a bit more like Tangerine Dream in the early '80s. Well, I'm having more trouble connecting with this one, simply because of the tongue-in-cheek middle tracks. I mean, those two tracks do not exactly represent what I would expect from the Air series (other than the obvious French voices). Other than those tracks, however, the album is great. So, on a scale of 1 to 10, Air I being a 9.5 and Air II being a 9, Air IV gets a . . . 7. Hunt it down. You may be right. Right off of the top of my (so called) head, I can't think of a better solo disc for Petey... Although Silence III might run a close second... I'm almost convinced that Peter should have recorded Air IV under a different persona and gone further in the direction of AIII with the series...
