I suppose being at the more ambient techno end has something to do with it, whereas the more "serious" releases - generally those without beats - seem to be perceived as having greater depth (a longer shelf life perhaps) and therefore worthy of closer scrutiny. Personally, although a huge fan of work by artists like Inoue (Organic Cloud and 62 Eulengasse are sublime) I genuinely feel that these guys have just as much to offer us. Take "Talk" from Day In The Park (& the Instict Comp.2) "Dub" from MS Series and "88 KMH" from Whole Traffic 2 - all trancey numbers but, innovative within their niche. Probably the criticism most often levelled at these titles is that they're repetitive (read short on variation) but that's frequently part of the charm. Certainly I've heard several acclaimed releases which are equally repetitive, yet plaudits have praised them for their subtle variances, which occur but occasionally over periods of perhaps 20 to 30 minutes ... is that higher art or, are these artists short on ideas too (?) ! I find I can enjoy these releases at night (when the wife has retired) and at the wheel driving to work... a claim I can't even make about the aforementioned Inoue. What's more, because their cult status has yet to fully mature, you can actually track most of them down - good news for those fortunates who have yet to experience their dubby charms. Xangadix 2 and Day In The Park in particular have great atmosphere, although each of the titles has been lovingly crafted, with strong melodic and chill moments to boot. Like many of the great sub label heroes they seem to have been spirited away from us, possibly a product of their time but, if so, a time that should come again. Finally, in order of preference : 1. Whole Traffic 2 2. Xangadix 2 3. Day In The Park 4. MS Series 5. Whole Traffic 6. Xangadix ...but, ask me again in a few weeks !! a fan. - --- + To post: ; to mail a person: + To unsubscribe: "unsubscribe" to + Online info at: www.faxlabel.com www.hyperreal.org/fax www.2350.org ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Dec 1999 11:08:32 -0600 From: tonelab@megsinet.net Subject: Re: (fax) Pino and Wildjamin It suprises me how little these guys (aka Basalt Boys) get mentioned on the list as they are responsible for producing one of the most consistent bodies of work on the label, six albums that are never less than interesting and frequently compulsive. >> i agree with you except for the whole traffic series which i feel sounds as if someone left the sequencer on for too long ... however the xangadix series, along with ms is very much in tune with what i listen to ... that minimal acid trancy xangadix works very well ... something must be said about their ability to score without overproduction ... with i guess holds true for most of the fax stuff, there is always some breathing room left on each release later, george - --- + To post: ; to mail a person: + To unsubscribe: "unsubscribe" to + Online info at: www.faxlabel.com www.hyperreal.org/fax www.2350.org ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Dec 1999 11:20:59 +0000 From: "Paul Milligan" Subject: (fax) Silence 4 Hey - listened to this for the first time (late) last night and although I fell asleep before the end it sounded reeeally good. All the classical/ethnic/ environmental touches that came together so well on the previous 3 releases are there again .... familiar but still fresh. The welcome return of a valued friend.
