I always felt that, with only a few exceptions, the double circle idea never did justice to the artwork. The layout seemed clumsy and amateurish, and the choice of circles often made the artwork seem oddly cropped or secondary to the circle layout. Best examples of the artwork playing second fiddle to the circles: 62 Eulengasse, all of the 2350 series, Alien Community 1(blecch!)...er, i guess most of the pre-breakout World series, actually. Not to say the idea wasn't totally without merit--When the circles were merely colors it worked very well as a categorization tool. Informationally, the circles are a good idea, it's when actual graphics were introduced that the informational value was lost. Also, not to say that the circle layout didn't produce some real winners: Ambiant Otaku, Datacide II, Sultan, Coeur Atomique and Music to Films all had artwork that benefitted or at least were able to hold their own against the circle format. However, I think the real winners have been releases that took the circle forms and ran with them, made something unique with them--the best example, and one that still sends shivers up my spine when i see it, is Air III. It's perfect in it's subtlety, but still easily recognizable as a Fax release. Other good ones include S.H.A.D.O., Amp, and to a lesser extent, Atom. As far as the new stuff that Andre's done, well, I personally liked it from day one. True, it doesn't have the same Fax cohesiveness as the circle layouts, but it's not constrained by that either. And there's still ways to get the circles in there-- look at Adlernebel for a pretty obvious example. That must be down to the superb track > they lifted for The Cookbook (and later on the Instinct compilation) Speaking for myself (I voted for Putney), it's because of Cookbook's Angel Circle indeed. I don't know the rest of The Putney (obviously), but this is one of my best Fax tracks of all time. Opinion about The Putney (as a whole) is not very good, but I remember such opinions about Music To Films, but when I finally was able to jugde it myself it's not that bad at all. Ofcourse Movement V is a highlight of that cd, but the rest of those tracks aren't so much worse. And still, I would like to listen to The Putney. Speaking about opinions. Some series seem to be highly overrated (in my view), namely 2350 and Shades (I still do not own the third installments of both). So I approached Modula Green very carefully, remembering the rave remarks about it, but to my pleasure that record turned out to be as good as people said. greetings, Leszek. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 14:51:01 +0000 From: "Paul Milligan" Subject: Re: (fax) Least Favourite Fax etc >> BTW - one of the other polls shows The Putney as a top title in >> demand for re-release. Angel Circle is truly a Fax classic and I sought out The Putney for that reason too. There is one other track on it which is reasonable, although vastly inferior to Circle IMO but, the rest is really mediocre and most certainly not as good as anything on say Music To Film. Anyway, there's only one way for you to be sure but, I bet it will never be reissued so dig deep. >Speaking about opinions. I can only say this ... in the same way that Modular lived up to the plaudits claims, I think you would feel the same about 2350/3 which is IMO way better (and by definition, quite different) to the first two installments ... which I thought were boring too! Difficult to predict your feelings about Shades 3 as it's very different BUT NOT BETTER than the first two. Go figure! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 17:30:09 +0000 From: "Paul Milligan" Subject: (fax) From the '96 Fax vaults ... a couple of very "untypical" titles to trade ... Arizona Tracks : Redeye - quirky idm stuff but, don't ask me who Redeye is! Ozoona : Koolman with Rob Gordon - 45 minutes of warmth, melody, deep bass and Warpish beats; followed by 12 minutes of weird, industrial, sound collage ... kool. I'm after Em:t comps (except 2000 & Explorer) or, Laswell's Panthalassa or, Tetsu's Slow & Low.
