Okay - so there's thousands, probably millions, still grooving to masses of artists from the 60's and much further back even than that; in fact there are many kids I'm sure (still in short trousers) who will come to enjoy such music in the future. So, will the work of Fax artists still be acknowledged in say ten years from now ... or, will the memories fade (and ultimately pass away) with the likes of us? It's interesting to ponder whether the likes of Otaku, Orion & Air will stand the test of time and still mean anything, to anyone, in say 2010. IMO if anything does kill off the memory it's less likely to be disappointment with the sounds themselves and more likely the fact of the ever expanding sea of bedroom generated dross that is becoming Ambient (or, Electronic) music. The battle of 'quantity versus quality' is rapidly being lost and soon we won't be able to see the wood for the trees. Potent stuff for a Friday morning. Paul has just raised the $62 Million dollar question with regard to music of the nineties as a whole. What people often fail to realise is that each generation always generates nostalgia for the period of their youth. The reason why we always hear so much about how great the Sixties were, is that opinion shapers in society (newspapers, TV, Radio etc.) are all currently fronted and controlled by people who were young and having a great time in the sixties. The reason why we are now hearing more and more about the seventies and eighties is because a different generation of journalists, writers and broadcasters are coming to the fore. Therefore I deduce from this that come the right time, people will be rolling along on a wave of nineties nostalgia, and electronic and ambient music will form a part of this, as it was such a dominate subculture at the time. What news? Paul ps. mmm, there probably is more cheese on Fax these days. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Jun 2001 11:34:29 +0100 From: Edward Jones Subject: (fax) Cheese I think some of the earlier, more trancey stuff is a whole lot cheesier than Fires 2. I reckon Houdini, Gorn and Gamma have to be the cheesiest releases on the label. Any other takers? DISCLAIMER: The information in this message is confidential and may be legally privileged. I do confess, although I didn't pay hideous dollar for them. I actually quite like Gamma, though, it's nice to listen to in a completely harmless and unchallenging sort of way. Can't say I ever play the other two though. And, before anyone starts offering me money for them, that doesn't mean I am ready to sell them! Anyway - we all bought Namlook 3 (not that that falls into the cheesy category - that falls into the slightly broader "Shit" category)! You know those Namlook's are definately the series (of the many Fax series) I find myself tiring of most quickly. I've offloaded several in the last few months that I used to think were okay ... now only left with the three I'd stick in the 'fairly good stuff' category, Namlook Nos. 4 7 & 12 ... the quality in amongst the quantity, imo (of course!) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 08 Jun 2001 11:33:17 +0100 From: "Paul Milligan" Subject: (fax) Hey ... haven't I pissed off some more of you yet!...? ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Jun 2001 09:41:02 -0400 From: "Luckabaugh, Steve" Subject: RE: (fax) Staying power? > What people often fail to realise is that each generation > always generates nostalgia for the period of their youth. reminds me of what i heard a comedian say lately. he said do you realize that in another 40-50 years we're going to have a bunch of old people sitting around listening to rap music, how weird is that going to be? well 10 years down the road is not that far away. with fax i think people will remember the classics like otaku. i think you will always have people like us that are fax fanatics and i highly doubt that any of us are just going to suddenly stop liking fax. even still today with the way fax has been going, there are many people learning about fax and starting to stockpile cds so i think they've solidified their place in music. steve. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Jun 2001 13:10:05 -0400 (EDT) From: laerm Subject: Re: (fax) Staying power?
