Soon, they found themselves accused of being a CSN&Y rip-off. Their first 2 albums, "America" and "Homecoming," are the only things they did worth a damn. All the crap they did after that was, well, CRAP. They're probably are as much responsible as anyone for launching "acoustic rock." - -- C:\Gary H@> http://www.gary-hendershot.com/ ghenders@gary-hendershot.com ghendershot@gmx.de (junk mail) Houston, TX USA Sent through GMX FreeMail - http://www.gmx.net ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Jun 2001 16:04:37 EDT From: Chrisknow1@aol.com Subject: (fax) Silence V Silence V is an excellent fifth chapter to this series, and probably closer to the minimalism of the third one than Silence IV's droning wall of sound pieces. The overall mood of this album is very melancholy and mournful--peaceful and beautiful, yes, but in a sad and reflective way. Asbendos--My least favorite track, with doom-laden swelling strings and middle-eastern theme, and some haunting soprano vocals. Very soundtrack-like. Nothing special, but decent nonetheless. While Angels Sleep--A very nice track of multi-tracked angelic voices floating on a bed of whispy Namlook electronics, with some jazzy, subsonic bass notes meandering in and out. Peaceful and meditative but at the same time there is the feeling of unease, which sets it apart from being just another new age theme song for the musically challenged. Master of the Sky--Things kick into high gear with this intense wall of sound synth workout, which seems heavily influenced by early Schulze (Timewind, in particular) and even some nods to Pink Floyd with the cascading melodic notes over the top. The voice of Silence comes in about halfway proclaiming "I am the master of the sky." Kinda sounds like Yoda from Star Wars, but pretty cool nevertheless. Ancient Beauty--Excellent track which starts out reprising While Angels Sleep with the choral voices, but then slowly builds into an epic, sweeping anthem by layering synth strings, heavy bass harmonics and a booming (yet restrained) funereal bass drum beat. Gorgeous. Picnic--Poorly titled piece but the highlight of the album. Begins with environmental sounds (birds, etc.), then Pete lays down some really quiet, self-reflective mood jazz chords on the keyboard. Soon a beautifully floating ambient drone starts to lift this "Picnic" off the ground and we're in cloudland. Halfway in we are treated to some of the most emotional and beautifully played jazz guitar Namlook has done in quite some time. He then brings in yet another layer in the form of a gently percolating rhythm track faintly heard in the background. The layers have all gelled sublimely now and the piece deserves to go on for another 20 minutes. In all, a return to form for Namlook, and a CD that is to be experienced, not just listened to. - --Chris K. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Jun 2001 21:37:27 -0700 From: "Raphael Almeria" Subject: RE: (fax) Silence V >Silence V is an excellent fifth chapter to this series, and probably closer I have to agree. Silence V is very good. I was pleasantly surprised after listening to the awfulness that was Silence IV. -R ------------------------------ End of faxlist-digest V2001 #96 ******************************* --- + To post: ; to mail a person: + To unsubscribe: "unsubscribe" to + Online info at: www.faxlabel.com www.hyperreal.org/fax www.2350.org
