My 'story' in connection with this more experimental release is basically one of being fairly impressed by the extract on Ambient Cookbook and on the strength of that, I bought the original. Very disappointed though, I found the entire work somewhat jarring and quite difficult. True it's not typical of Namlook's sound around that time but, his other solo works which sit either side (Namlook 4 & 5 before / 6 & 7 after) are superior and more accessible imo. Nevertheless, I look forward to reading your objective review in the near future. Meanwhile, just thought I'd comment on Fax's performance in the recent Classic Ambient Recordings - The 2001 Survey, published at Hyperreal (a massive effort!!!)... * Nice to see Tetsu coming through so strongly - hey, three titles in the top twenty. (The Otaku rerelease obviously helped) * Interesting that 2350 Vols 1 & 2 both eclipsed Vol 3 as that runs contrary I think (?) to the Faxlist's own survey last year. * Apart from the obvious titles that you'd expect to see faring well, honourable mentions for the slightly less well known Phonehead, 4 Seasons, Sultan and 62 Eulengasse. It would be interesting to know whether these were voted for by Faxheads who lurk on the Ambient list or, general all-round ambient lovers. * Incidently, Substrata came out top - yet again !! Anyone who's interested can find the entire survey at this url: http://music.hyperreal.org/epsilon/info/2001_classic_ambient.html Paul ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Jan 2002 18:54:18 -0800 From: "Kream" Subject: Re: Subject: (fax) Any new titles in the offing? And please notice, that it's true about their Mello Hippo Disco Show. Theis last studio album - Translations - one of the best electronic albums of 2001, and it's not so old school psychedelic. So Namlook/FSOL is still cool :) np: RZA as Bobby Digital - Cousins ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Jan 2002 17:41:47 +0100 From: "stm" Subject: (fax) redruM A while back I spotted this picture at an ebay auction: http://digilander.iol.it/radioactivetoy/whrs/pk08038.JPG it's from the Crypr Corp. 3 vinyl release and credits all tracks to Namlook & reruM, while ... a track from the same release which is featured on the Def. Amb. Coll. on Rising High is credited to Namlook and Peter Prochir. In addition both the Crypt Corp. and the Possible Gardens projects have the inner circle in yellow. All this let me think that maybe redruM and Peter Prochir were the same person. Yet I can hardly believe that the man responsible for the quite phenomenal Shellground is the same as the man who collaborated on Miles Apart and Possible Gardens. If it is then, he is a true musical chameleon! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Jan 2002 18:05:08 +0100 (MET) From: Leszek Zabinski Subject: Re: (fax) redruM On Thu, 24 Jan 2002, Paul Milligan wrote: > Does seem strange doesn't it. But seriously - I'm not surprised at all. Not judging by the quality of the three mentioned releases. Especially Possible Gardens which easily ranks next to Shellground. cheers, Leszek. P.S. I know your affection for Shellground but it doesn't mean that everyone rates it that high OR, like in this case, that nobody can rate Shellground and Possible Gardens (or any other cd) evenly. greetings from rainy Poland.
