Just had these two on, back-to-back, for a fairly authentic slice of Eastern ambience. I like that PK has the good sense to lie low on some of Burhan Ocal's more interesting bits and so we don't end up with a pretentious Loop Guru thing. However, I felt the 'poetry' on S1 goes on for too long, which is why I reckon S2 has the edge. These two artists should really come together again. A rephrase might read " so we don't end up with something trying to sound like Loop Guru " ... I didn't actually say LG were "pretentious" although (thinking about it) they are a bit. Nevertheless, for a further explanation of my thinking on this one, please see bracketed note below. I think I'm singing again. (LG's global fusion mix of old world sounds and new world attitude is technically most exceptional but, ultimately, because they tend to utilise a very *wide* variety of world instrumentation and sampling to spice up what are fairly pedestrian rhythms, it's really just dance music at the end of the day. I feel that Burham's use of instruments on Sultan series is more 'authentic' and, therefore, more consequential. Which is why I appreciate PK's decision to give Burham's collaborative contribution a greater weighting than his own.) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Feb 2002 19:55:31 -0000 From: "Colin Cheesman" Subject: Re: (fax) That's A Nice Pair Of Dog's Bollocks I'm afraid you may be missing the point here. It doesn't really matter if the use of instruments by a particular artist is more etnically sound (sic) than another artist. Its what hits your ears and how your head responds to it. Yes some of Loop Guru is "just dance music" and bloody good stuff too. But the third chamber is still one of my favourite ambient pieces irregardless of what istruments are used.
