I'd actually forgotten how good it was. Following on from Organic Cloud this album bears many similarities to its predecessors, but also many differences. While not perhaps as immediately grabbing as Ambiant Otaku or Organic Cloud, repeated listens show this to be a more mature work. The first track starts off with some interesting soundscapes then towards the end a lovely melody comes for around the last three minutes of the track. Tracks 2,3 and 4 are all about textures and exploring different sounds. Forgive me if I don't go into detail, all I can say is go have a listen. The fifth track features some excellent sub-bass towards the end and actually rather reminds of some elements of 2350 Broadway (I). The final track finishes off the album in style with some more excellent bass, a return towards the melodic synths and some nice beats into the bargain. Overall 8.5/10 Cymatic Scan Alas a rather short review for this one. More of a passing comment. I'm sure others will beg to differ, but this one never really did it for me. I remember reading somewhere that Tetsu and Bill went into the studio, Tetsu played around a bit just "tuning up", only to be told by our friend Bill after a while that they had already finished somewhat to his bemusement (and mine). Basically an hour of background noise, with the occasional bass note from Bill. (On a historic note, I don't think Warren was too impressed by this one initially either as he soon passed on his copy to me in return for my second copy of =Winter= many, many moons ago.) Having not been involved in this list til recently, I can just imagine the flares & salvoes volleyed around when all this first hit. Obviously, the smoke has yet to clear. I *know* mp3s are inferior in every way to CDs. I *know* it's far preferable to actually possess the physical CD & cover art than having mere computer files. I *know* that Namlook licensed all this FAX music because he wanted this wonderful work to be heard & to hopefully expose new listeners to the FAX world(s). I *know* that I could never find all these classic & obscure treasures, especially not in CD stores ("Air, you mean those French guys? Oh, they have a fax number? Numluck, never heard of 'im . . ." --I am sooooo sick of all that!). If Namlook were head of Sony & there were no pressing limitations & there were enough copies to use as coasters & the CDs stayed in print, then this wouldn't be an issue. There *is* no debate! Buy new (& old, when possible) FAX CDs, of course, but the old chestnuts--get' em where you can & dig the music! There are still so many Fax cds out there to get. There are still people who cannot afford to purchase even 10 Fax cds and end up liking 2-3 of them. And that's where mp3 (or cdr copies) comes up convenient - to check it out and judge if it's worth getting a realdeal. I know what I'm talking about, cos I was one of those people until I started to work on my own and earn. I can imagine. Once I've been offered to buy this one for $70, but it was out of my range then. But even today I'm not sure if I'd buy a single cd for such an amount, maybe the first pressing of Silence (for Music Man/N.E.W.S.) cos it's something very special. > what`s the most you`ve paid for a title? > for me, nothing above the regular cd prices > the least!!!??? it isn't very low, but concerning its low availability... Last year I manage to dig (yes, I'm a digger) Ambient Compilation 2 (used, in decent shape) for $8.99. I asked the seller about the label and catalogue number beforehands (he didn't know what he had in his hands) and he wrote back that he is not sure about the name of the label or the cat. no. but there's this fax number all over and it reads "produced at Sonic Studios Frankfurt for Namlook Productions". Many of them have been posted to the list, but, hey, they're still new to the site. And, also, after years of hemming and hawing and too many excuses to count, much of the work toward the full integration of the 95 or so vinyl releases on FAX has been done. Most of what remains is filling in the blanks for the nineteen (as of right now) releases that we don't have full information for. (Yes, many helpful souls sent us info for releases that we now claim to have no information for, but the information sent did not seem to be complete. Apologies.) All that's visible on the site right now is an updated vinyl page: . You may also find 12" releases popping up under the Historical Releases section on our main page. We're going to try to hold off further integration (including pages for the actual 12" releases) until we have info for all of the titles. This will ultimately depend on how long it takes for all of the info to make its way to us. Thanks in advance for your help! Actually, I do really enjoy Cymatic Scan. There's not much happening on the surface there, but sometimes that's what I need. I find it to be quite helpful when I need to maintain a certain level of focus while "in the zone" at work. Mmmm, droney-drone drones. I can't remember, though, if that was an extra Cymatic Scan that I traded to you, nor can I remember if that was my first or second (ie, replacement for the first, which had become scratched) copy of Winter. Ah well. I must admit that I'm still not sure what that is on the cover of Cymatic Scan. If the music weren't so soothing, it'd probably keep me up nights. - -w. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 May 2002 14:49:40 +0100 From: "Paul Milligan" Subject: (fax) Fax Rarity to Trade Here's one that only crops up once in a blue moon...
