Sounds like a winner. In response to recent polls, FAX & Ambient (like Bird & Frodo in past times) lives!! I've enjoyed Klaus' muzik since "Timewind" in the early 70s, though his output has been too prolific to check out every release for the past thirty years. What'd you think of "In Blue," his late 90s reunion with Mr Ashra? Sounds like a winner. Thanks for those kind words. It's maybe worth pointing out this was the first occasion on which I've come to the List with a review after only a single listening... but, such was my enthusiasm. I've had it on another couple of times since and my opinion is only reinforced. It's funny with Klaus, he seems to go thru these periods of putting out what sounds like more of the same then, suddenly, come at you (again!) with something really inspired. On this occasion the inspiration has clearly rubbed off on Namlook who more than rises to the occasion. I've been one of the many in the past who have scoffed at the longevity of the Moog series but, Vol IX seems the logical pinnacle of all that went before... the fact is, there isn't a single duff moment throughout the entire 53 minutes... and it's not often you can say that about a Fax release these days. The only negative(ish) comment I can think to make is: how is Pete going follow up this release? >I've enjoyed Klaus' muzik since "Timewind" in the early 70s, though his >output has been too prolific to check out every release for the past >thirty years. What'd you think of "In Blue," his late 90s reunion with >Mr Ashra? Well actually I think you'll find "In Blue" was actually recorded back in '94 ... it's a strong album but, not one of his best. It would have made a better single disc release imo as some bits are a bit bland and therefore, pull down the mean average standard, if you get my drift. Much better was the follow up "Are You Sequenced" which I namechecked in yesterday's review. Of course that release featured a second disc of remixes, including three by Namlook, one of which was quite superb. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 May 2002 10:28:35 +0200 (MEST) From: ghendershot@gmx.de Subject: Re: (fax) Ambient is Alive. > ...I agree, there is a fine descriptive line between ambient and > new age, however in sound I believe that line is more apparent... Isn't New Age supposed to be some sort of pseudo-religioso "spiritual" music? :^) If true, then what the hell is Yanni and John Tesh supposed to be all about??? The one common thread appears to be the fact that not many people want to associate the artists they admire with being "new age". Like many, I associate the term with music being played in the background on the somewhat infrequent occasions when one finds oneself in a shop selling incense, smelly candles and wind chimes... come on let's admit it, we've all bought something from these places at least once and it's usually very 'nice' but, the fad soon passes. So, where am I going with this one? Frankly, nowhere... and I don't much care! Now, if only I could get our local delicatessen to pipe Shellground, it goes really well with stinky cheese and German sausage. I sense a fantasy thread coming on... Fax music in retail environments. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 May 2002 09:20:00 -0700 (PDT) From: Greg Hill Subject: Re: (fax) DSOTM IX Paul, I went ahead and ordered my copy yesterday from Ear Rational...I like most of the Moog cds, so I'm sure this will be no different..based on your review, it sounds like some of the tracks have some beats and melody? are there any BIG sounding analogue synths, similar to Free Your Mind? - --- Paul Milligan wrote: > > >Hey, Paul - Thanks for the great review of DSOTM > IX, though it helps > >that you're enthused about the program itself. > Sounds like a winner. > > Thanks for those kind words. I was thinking it would be good if we, the members of the faxlist do something together to celebrate this milestone. I know in the past we have had the world fax listening days a couple of years back orgainised I think by Noah, but is there someway we could get together? Ideas anyone?
