I don't know why, it just seems to be that way. The Dark Side series sounds better on headphones, as does From Within (the first one, especially 'A Million Miles To Earth') I remember reading a cover note to a fax cd recommending to 'listen loud'. Fax records are surely worthwhile listening on headphones. The most significant expereinece for me was the first track of the "Modula Green" CD, just awesome how many details are on this single piece of music. "Shades of Orion 2" is good, too. "Syn 2". "Kooler". I suppose the Y&T releases are. On the other hand, I would not listen to "Ozoona" or "Atom" on headphones - semms not appropriate to me. Although not Fax - I do listen to other labels ;-)) - I tried both my Susumu Yokota CDs "Magic thread" and "Sakura". Absolutely horrible. How subtle those records are on the speakers, I just cannot stand them on headphones. I just had a great experience overnight with 'Adham Shaik - Journey to the Sun'. Great stuff that works really well with a loud headphone set. 'Drift' is very cool too (its tinny over-processed chorus-effected guitar by Tim Floyd is a little too 80s-lite for me, but I can live with it). I listened to clips of Adham's 'new' release (comprised of old material: 50 copies limited edition on Interchill) -- it sounded too familiar, like tired backpacker/'90s techno -- just my opinion, sorry. I guess I was hoping I would find a 'Journey to the Sun Part II' but nothing else sounds like 'Journey to the Sun' It's an amazing CD. Sitar, liquid beats, interesting and unique-sounding dreamy, aquatic production and evocative field recordings from India... Does anyone know if there are any other releases by Adham Shaikh that are closer to the sound of 'Journey to the Sun' or even 'Drift'? It seems like Adham hasn't really released much material in the last 8 years that sounds like these two standouts. I've tried a couple dj Cheb i Sabbah discs and they don't have that immediate out of nowhere, otherworldly sound that the Shaikh discs do. Adham, make another masterpiece! We want more! By the way, Invisible Fields is good. The first track is kind of goofy, but it's energizing and funny with it's computer voices. I really love 'Bath': a great long experimental track that pushes the CD over the top for me. Did anyone go to any war protests today? We want more! well , i know he's working on a dubsonic album and as i;m not so into dub but more stuff like the instinct styles .I think dub sonic is pretty much like the other newer stuff, ethnic samples and a focus on using 'real ' instrumentation and vocal takes and stuff but dubsonic is actually adhams band and again , i dont think has the openess and beatless spaces. >> Did anyone go to any war protests today? > John W. we were 300 miles away from london but there in spirit , 1-2 million did in uk ..... cheers, matt ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Feb 2003 13:41:37 -0000 From: "Lxacoustics" Subject: Re: (fax) Re: fax headphone listeners hi, > Fax records are surely worthwhile listening on headphones. Absolutely horrible. How subtle those > records > are on the speakers, I just cannot stand them on headphones. yeah , strangely i found a siniliar thing with another of yokota's , i think this indicates they were mixed or referenced on speakers only , sometimes on headphones these type of mixes sound very dodgy.Headphone mixing is much harder as it shows more up...but can also show more of the intricacy i guess....its all in the ear of the beholder though.
