I recently received one which asked for my security details. I forwarded it to ebay because it looked suspicious (after all, no company requests your security details) and, sure enough, it wasn't from them. They asked for the header details so they could try to trace it. I also got an email from someone claiming to be an ebay member and saying 'I see you're buying Fax discs. I can sell you some etc'. By chance, I recognised the name as being an ebay member but with a bit of researchany old fraudster could get a Fax buyer/seller's name off ebay quite easily. Maybe it was legitimate but I didn't respond. Just thought you should be aware. These scam emails are on the increase: eBayers, always check the headers of any email purporting to be from either eBay or Paypal, that asks for your password, or asks you to go to a site and log in your password. The URL may appear to be an ebay URL, but it's been camo-ed: scam. These are id high-jack attempts. Last week a seller, id 'vivdiss', has their id 'jacked: the perp changed the id to 'blackslavemaster' and went about winning auction after auction and immediately leaving nasty, insane negative feedback. This went on for nearly a day, before ebay were able to secure the account, remove the offensive feedback, restore 'vivdiss's feedback - the sellers who'd been hit by 'blackslavemaster' left negative feedback! - it was on 'vivdiss's record for a few days! So, Pete's right: be careful: do not click links in emails supposing to be from ebay or paypal that ask for you to confirm your password: ebay nor paypal ever function that way! If you get such an email, it is *definitely*, 100% of the time, a scam. > I also got an email from someone claiming to be an ebay member and saying > 'I see you're buying Fax discs. You may or may not choose report the member to ebay: that is your prerogative. Forward the member's ebay id and the headers of their email and the text of their message, if you so choose. The offender will receive at *least* a warning, if not immediate suspension. I do not respond to such un-solicited offers: I don't take the time to turn them in, either. However, that is an option. Did this offer come in an email sent through ebay's 'ask another member a question' option, or was this a normal email? No other ebay member can get your email address *unless* they are or have been involved in a transaction with you. If this was a normal email contact, not thru ebay, it could be someone on the list, that has an ebay id, and harvested your email addy here. Again, I ignore such offers. HTH and thanks again. =seek= ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Feb 2003 18:55:16 -0500 From: "jackthetab" Subject: Re: (fax) Silence MP3 CD (PS) is there a reason for the differences in the bits? kunst und wahnsinn, jackthetab #####\ _ /##### #( )# | _( )__ | #( )# ##### | /_woof/ | ##### #" "# | ___m/I_ /_____ | #" "# # O # |____#-x.\ /++m\ /.x-#____| # O # #m.m# | /" \ ///###\\\ / "\ | #m.m# #####/ ######/ \###### \##### /_______________________________________\ - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Richard Hughes" To: "fax list" Sent: Monday, February 24, 2003 3:32 AM Subject: (fax) Silence MP3 CD (PS) > PS: > > The booklet for this one is really nice, reproducing exactly inside all of > the front and back plates (but not the liner notes inside) of the original 5 > albums. > > > For the record, the tracks are enocoded at slightly different bit rates as > follows: > > Omid/Hope @ 320kbit > Garden Of Dreams @ 259kbit > Santur @ 320 kbit > Trip @ 269kbit > > Life/Death @ 258 > Heaven (aw-cut) @320 > Faith @273 > Sweet Angels @320 > What is Time @256 > > Into The Desert @320 > Mirage @320 > Ship on Sea of Sand @261 > Lost City @320 > Stars @320 > The Bottom of The Ocean @320 > Dream Time @320 > > Circle of Life @258 > Deep Inside @320 > Bedouin Love @260 > The Night Before I Left @320 > > Asbendos @320 > While Angels Sleep @320 > Master of the Sky @320 > Ancient Beauty @320 > Picnic @320 > > Heaven (orig.Version) @257 > > > > > > > > > *************************************************************************** > The information in this email is confidential and may be legally privileged. > It is intended solely for the addressee and access to this email by anyone > else is unauthorised. But if encoded properly at a high bit rate they can have a sound quality that is indistinguishable to the human ear from the source. (Unless perhaps you have a $30k stereo system). As Wally stated it makes a big difference what programs you use to encode an MP3. Some programs produce higher quality MP3's than others at the same bit rate. One of those sites you referenced used Music Match Jukebox for their testing and encoded at 128 and 160. That is an inferior product and those are inferior bit rates. MP3's encoded at 128 or 160 are not going to be able to be able to match the quality of the source. You need a minimum of 192 and 256+ is ideal for an MP3 that sounds as good as the source. You also need to use high quality programs to do the ripping and encoding (ie. EAC and LAME) not Music Match Jukebox. > please check these sites out before > stating that mp3's are a great format > over cd's. > > http://www.lincomatic.com/mp3/mp3quality.html > http://sd.lecastel.org/mp3.html > http://www.minidisc.org/hifichoice_april2000.html > http://home.att.net/~wcc.techx/MP3.htm > > Again, I will still be aquiring the Silence series > (mp3 release). > > kunst und wahnsinn, > jackthetab > > #####\ _ /##### > #( )# | _( )__ | #( )# > ##### | /_woof/ | ##### > #" "# | ___m/I_ /_____ | #" "# > # O # |____#-x.\ /++m\ /.x-#____| # O # > #m.m# | /" \ ///###\\\ / "\ | #m.m# > #####/ ######/ \###### \##### > /_______________________________________\ > > > > > --- > + To post: ; to mail a person: > + To unsubscribe: "unsubscribe" to > + Online info at: www.hyperreal.org/fax www.2350.org > ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Feb 2003 21:55:08 +1300 From: "mcnair" Subject: (fax) fax, koner, aloof proof etc cds fs A few more cds on ebay...including aloof proof, spyra-phonehead, definitive ambient collection 2(aw),sun electric, von hausswolff, Thomas koner, christophe charles, half the 1st ambient cookbook (instinct fax comp.)etc Please cut and paste the link. http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewSellersOtherItems&userid=belij am&include=0&since=-1&sort=3&rows=25 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Feb 2003 13:08:16 +0100 From: "Richard Hughes" Subject: (fax) Silence MP3 CD Well I've pretty much listened to the Silence MP3 cd (just on the last = couple of tracks now) and I have to say the quality of the recording is = overall pretty excellent. It has been playing back through my dvd player = which goes direct to the amp of my hi-fi system. I did a few spot checks = along the way comparing the MP3 playback to the original cd's and to be = honest they were as far as I could tell for the most part = indistinguishable in terms of quality and range. I had to make a couple = of adjustments to the volume on Omid/Hope and Trip as I got the = impression the playback level from the MP3 cd was getting louder as the = track progressed, but then again I could have just been imagining this. So all in all I would say I was very satisifed. I have yet to listen to = it on headphones, but so far so good. I will also be interested to hear = how the 2350 Broadway series translates to this format. (Incidentally I was listening to the original 2350 the other day, at = quite a loud volume and I was surprised halfway through the track 'Raga' = when I heard a deeply EMS processed voice proclaim "This is Tetsu" - = very much in the vein of "This is San Franciscooooo" from Namlook IV. = Must say I've never noticed that all the times I've listened to it over = the years. Call me an idiot, but there we are...) Of the other new releases, I haven't yet listened to Anthony Rother. But = listened to Sol - Stardust a couple of times on the way home last night. = I'm not sure how many Fax fans will react to this release as frankly it = is not what you'd normally expect from Namlook & Co. Despite Ramin's = involvement if you're looking for the next Sad World or Modula Green you = won't find it here. Basically it is a collection of 'club'-type tracks (whatever that = means), that range from trance to almost hard underground-house type = stuff of the kind that might not have been out of place in clubs such as = Sound Factory / Twilo a few years ago. Anyway an interesting release that I'll have to listen to a few more = times before making my mind up on way or the other..
