My rejoinder would be that it IS better on the second viewing (and that it's probably worth a second look as well) - that may be because you can overlook some of the overkill associated with what I previously called "audience baiting" (i.e., lowest common denominator appeal) after you've seen it once. The first one seemed to carry more "epic feel" to it (given the scope of the film - which feels *smaller* than this one), but I would have to disagree with the notion that there's NO epic feel to it. Neo's role is expanded backwards to encompass an "Adamic" aspect, filling out the Christ motif (biblically, Christ is the "second Adam", redeeming the fall of the first and so mankind with it) - hence his romance with Trinity (as an Eve figure - note that the opening sequence is a "Fall") in integral to the theme and not a sub-plot slice of cheese. Additionally, there are a few more Greek mythology nods tossed in for good measure. Not *quite* as many references to Lewis Carroll in this one, but they're still there. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 May 2003 21:10:52 +0000 From: "Jean-Marc Dekesel" Subject: Re:: (fax) Locating Namlook's Position in the Matrix OT Reloaded was released this week-end in Belgium so I could only see it once yet and I must admit I didn't quite understand what everything was about ... especially since the hardest to get dialogues take place in a white room by a guy with a white beard in a white suit … why that is a problem? Just try to read the subtitles if you don’t speak English fluently ! I did however had a disturbing feeling the guy in white was making it all so complex and difficult just to choke the 90% minus 16 audience with a ‘difficult so it probably is good’ feeling (and I must see the third one to fully understand). Especially if you compare it to the heroic speech of Morpheus that I did understand: “Hi you all, we always won, so we will win again! Thank you! Good night and enjoy the music!” or the cheesy love scenes one mentioned already … BUT … I love those cheesy love scenes and I love the way Morpheus is filmed from behind as a god and I love to watch Trinity when she’s popping bullets in bad guys … So do you have to spend your cash and time on that? Sure thing. Only Fax titles left I still want are Syn 2 or Elixir of Life ... both still in-print I believe. (Would also consider other 'decent' stuff.)
