Simple reason, actually - from his mouth too - licensing issues regarding samples used. He didn't have permission, and therefore is not able to release the songs legally. The third disc of "Last Train To Lhasa" is is the one that I prefer, as it's much more inna ambient stylee than Toby's usual ethno-dub stuff. But ambient ain't a driving genre IMHO. When driving alone, I need something loud. Mostly guitar-based stuff, or anything with lots of bass. So I usually pull out Low, John Butler Trio, Tool, or acid/techno etc, rather than anything on FAX. When the Trouble&Stife and/or Daughter is in the car, then maybe something softer gets an airing: The Necks, anything from the Dakini label, Budd&Eno, classical stuff, and of course the bloody Wiggles. - -- Geoff ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Jan 2004 14:42:58 -0800 (PST) From: brian@lists.frickster.net Subject: Re: (fax) Fax driving music [was: "The Type of Person Who Listens to FAX"] On Fri, 23 Jan 2004, Geoff Elgey wrote: > The third disc of "Last Train To Lhasa" is is the one that I prefer, > as it's much more inna ambient stylee than Toby's usual ethno-dub stuff. The 3CD version of Last Train was a VERY limited release; you might find it on eBay or somewhere like that, but I paid almost $140 to get my copy from a con artist in Australia. I have to admit, I think the third CD is WELL worth the money alone. There are only three songs, but they are all very long remixes, and some are pretty ambient. It's all his fault. bizarre, me too! my piano teacher taught me to play stuff like 'oxygene IV' and 'magentic fields II' on a dx7 as she said they were the perfect type of things to learn, and it just went from there when i listened to the real things. which were obviously *slightly* better than my interpretations ;) anyway, has anyone heard 'pop for dwoozle' yet? the last couple of move d (+ namlook) offerings didn't really scale the heights of 'wired' for me, so i'm intrigued to hear this. the blurb on the fax website sounds good. but i guess that's the point of a blurb =) [nick] ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Jan 2004 08:57:20 -0000 From: "Corbin, Nick" Subject: RE: (fax) Fax driving music [was: "The Type of Person Who Listen s to FAX"] >> The third disc of "Last Train To Lhasa" is is the one that I prefer, >> as it's much more inna ambient stylee than Toby's usual ethno-dub stuff. >THat's my favorite CD of his EVER. Well, I wouldn't call them stupid. Some people are collectors who insist on the original. It's kind of like the difference between an original Van Gogh and a print. I should have mentioned that in all of 2003-2004 this is only the second listing on ebay I've seen of the original Air 1. If you wanted a complete set of originals, you either buy now or risk waiting another year... It'll be interesting to see if after another 10 years these CD's are going for $2000 or whether they plummet back to "sane" levels. I'm inclined to believe that the originals will keep rising slowly as long as FAX produces new records -- law of supply and demand. We've already had enough time to see the impact of MP3 and AW reissues, as well as itunes, etc, and they don't seem to be impacting the original prices too much. Well, I have reports that 2003 prices are a bit of 2002/2001, but that could just be the US+world economy. Maya (his first widely available release) is brilliant IMHO and still my favorite. The 1st couple of tracks are happy and very accessible (maybe a touch too so). But the rest of the tracks are brilliant ambient and ambient dub. The percussion sequencing on most of the tracks is exquisite -- listen closely. Most of them have wonderfully subdued melodies that just float into the realm of consciousness. The whole effect works wonderfully and the complete album flows well as a whole. But... I may be a bit nostalgically biased as this is one of the first albums of this type I bought (93?) and I've always loved it... right around the time I discovered FAX (PK08/01)! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Jan 2004 13:34:17 -0500 From: MuzikJunky Subject: Re: (fax) a new ebay record > Have they heard of the Ambient World label?
