The same problem here in Belgium. Until I started using E-bay I didn't realize for how much money I had collected during the years. I talked with a lot of insurance companies. And it is almost impossible to get a decent insurance here. Here are some of their arguments : - - A cd is not unique like a work of art (they see it as a product of mass-production which is kind of true if you're in to Britney or something like that.) - - There are no experts on the topic here. The closest I came in finding one was one guy who knew a lot of the value of the Beatles etc. (He had never heard of Fax...) In fact he had detailed catalogs with pictures and prices for the betales, the stones etc. And that fact brings us to the third problem : - - How can You prove the replacement value of the disc? Since catalogs and experts don't exist the only way you can prove the replacment value is by saving screenshots of e-bay. But they asked at least five recent screenshots for each disk to take an average of the price it was paid. And I would have to do that every year. They want A RECENT list remember..? In their opinion it is only worth wat the fool is willing to pay for it at a certain time. And here comes my problem : I own 1423 Cd's most of them rarities. 1423 x 5 = 7115 screenshots each year. Plus the fact that I buy an average of 10 - 20 disc each month. I scanned al my covers and put them in a huge database along with the numbers tracklistings etc. I have pictures of my collection but will it be any good? This was the solution : I calculated an estimated value of my collection and added that with the value of my other belongings and for that amount I am insured. So my cd collection is not insured as a collection but together with my furniture for a flat-fee. If something happens like a fire they pay me that amount back. And yes that is very expensive. It would be nice if e-bay added an extra option to it's service where you could browse and download information about old auctions. I think I'll ask them. We the collectors are their customers and we make them a lot of money. So perhaps it is possible. best regards Benny ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Jan 2004 14:16:32 +0100 From: "radio-active-toy" Subject: (fax) more on ebay: Namlook VII + Woob 1194 (instinct) http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewSellersOtherItems&userid=3Daut_= riche or user id =3D aut_riche thanks - -- Riccardo :: =20 :: :: :::: ::::: ::: : :: :: =20 :: .:::: :: =20 :: ::.:: :: =20 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Jan 2004 13:23:55 -0700 From: Christian von Ompteda Subject: Re: (fax) RE:How do we protect our Fax collections? I'm not sure if anyone has noted it since I've not been following the thread too carefully, but one handy way to track your CD's instead of putting extra effort into a custom database solution is to use www.discogs.com. It's a good way to keep a list of your collection off site for security purposes, and you can import an Excel copy of your collection file from the website at any time should you ever have to pursue some form of recovery. This doesn't really help with values unfortunately, and the only easy way to do that in this case is to assign values on a regular basis to the spreadsheet. The only drawback for people like Benny, myself, and I'm guessing most of you, is that it still takes quite a while to pick all of the items in your collection from the database (including adding releases that they don't have, which for me is about 30% so far). I started putting my CD collection in around October of last year, and am still doing it, with most of my 3500+ pieces of vinyl still to go. cheers, Christian. I wonder if the owner of that site woudl allow values/market prices be incorporated into that database? It could become a price guide to electronic and indie music in addition to being a discography. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Christian von Ompteda" To: ; Sent: Sunday, January 25, 2004 12:23 PM Subject: Re: (fax) RE:How do we protect our Fax collections? > I'm not sure if anyone has noted it since I've not been following the > thread too carefully, but one handy way to track your CD's instead of > putting extra effort into a custom database solution is to use > www.discogs.com.
