OK, now that my collection is 97% complete, I want to get it organized. I've run into a couple of stumbling blocks that I would appreciate input on: (especially Warren!) 1. For "project names" that are just the artist's name (ie: "Anthony Rother" instead of a made-up project name like "Dreamfish"), should we consider the "project name" to be "firstname lastname" or "lastname, firstname". Warren's 2350.org appears to have chosen "firstname lastname" -- why? So if ordering a FAX collection by project name, one would sort using "firstname lastname"? 2. If one answers "firstname lastname" for #1, then wouldn't that be confusing if one integrates their FAX collection into the rest of their CD collection and an artist/project is represented both in FAX and out of FAX? For instance, let's say I had "Rother, Anthony - somealbum" in my non-FAX collection and now I want to integrate "Anthony Rother - Magic Diner"... in this situation these 2 CD's by the same artist would be located in different parts of my collection! 3. Also, if one answers "firstname lastname" for #1, then what should be done when project names are just lastnames in some cases and full names in others? The best (only?) example is "Inoue/Edwards/Beail - Audio" vs. "Tetsu Inoue - Slow & Low". Once again, one would think that these should be located consecutively, not miles apart. 4. Even choosing "lastname, firstname" for #1 has its problems. The most annoying one is when a project name appears to be a real name but is really a pseudonym. The most obvious (only?) example is "Atom Heart". Should that be "Heart, Atom" in this case? Here's a short list of what I see as the pros/cons for each approach: a) "firstname lastname" pro: that's what's printed on the bonifide FAX CD art (spine) pro: unambiguous when dealing with "Atom Heart" con: won't integrate with non-FAX collection sorted by "last, first" con: "Inoue/Edwards/Beail" sorts far away from "Tetsu Inoue - Slow & Low" b) "lastname, firstname" pro: integrates with existing collection perfectly pro: "Inoue/Edwards/Beail" vs. "Tetsu Inoue" makes more sense con: what to do with "Atom Heart" con: not really going with what is "official" (ie: printed on the cover) con: my collection list will be at odds with 2350.org, the de facto definitive FAX list. OK, so you think I'm crazy agonizing over this stuff, but when you're surrounded by 300+ FAX CD's and 2000+ other CD's, you have to keep things organized or you'll never find anything! I'm very inclined to prefer option b (last, first), and fix up the instances like "Inoue/Edwards/Beail" to include firstnames. And I guess just leave Atom Heart as though it was just a project name (ie: don't reverse it into "Heart, Atom"). Lastly, I considered sorting by cat number (ie: PK08/01), but since I don't have them all memorized (yet?), that would make finding things harder. PS: I wish PK had organized things a little more consistently over the years, but that's another story... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Feb 2004 09:15:58 -0800 (PST) From: brian@lists.frickster.net Subject: Re: (fax) organizing a FAX collection (Warren!) The simplest way, and the way I find to be the easiest, is to keep all FAX releases separate from the rest of my collection. Then I simply organize them by serial number: PK 08/xxx PS 08/xx PW xx then compilations, AWs, Ys, etc. I didn't even try to organize otherwise. The best thing I can see would be to create a very complex MySQL database that contains fields for the various quirks of the collection, and then have lots of strange 1->many relationships, i.e., Pete Namlook maps to any CD on which he appears... Very complex... I know this doesn't help you much, Trevor, but it's the best way I've found to organize. If I want to find all the records on which, say, Namlook appears, I just query my Excel spreadsheet (or in the future my database). - -Brian On Sat, 21 Feb 2004, Trevor Cordes wrote: > OK, now that my collection is 97% complete, I want to get it organized. > I've run into a couple of stumbling blocks that I would appreciate input > on: (especially Warren!) > > 1.
