I am thinking about ripping my entire fax collection at 320 kbps (using EAC and Lame with a variable bit rate setting) and putting every Fax cd on a single portable player. I just picked two 20 GB Archos V2 mp3 players for $72 each at amazon.com due to some crazy rebates and discounts. I think I will swap out the hard drive for a 60 or 80 GB drive in one of them. If I install 60 gb drive my cost will be around $160 for a 60GB mp3 player after I sell the 20 GB bare drive on Ebay. The Archos player is no ipod but, it's not that much bigger (fits in my pocket easily) and the sound quality is excellent. At 320 kbps and even at 256 kbps VBR I can't hear any difference between the original and the mp3. (But I am not trying to start that debate again so lets not go down that road). Has anyone else attempted such an ambitious project? I love the thought of being able to carry my entire Fax collection in my pocket and access any Fax album at the press of a button. I'm not sure how large a drive I will need though. Will 60 GB be large enough or will I need 80GB? Maybe I will put the entire Rather Interesting catalogue on there too if I have room. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 May 2004 15:37:33 -0500 (CDT) From: brian@lists.frickster.net Subject: Re: (fax) Entire Fax collection in the palm of your hand I have my entire FAX collection ripped to .m4p format at 192kbps, 48kHz. 1235 songs, 7 days, 8 hours, 25 minuts, and 31 seconds of music. This took a few days to do, but it's really sweet. I now have a list of FAX cds at my disposal, too, so when you all tease me with your eBay auctions, I can see if I've already got that release. I ripped them all in iTunes, so in the "Comments" field, I put the serial number of the release. Then I can sort by PW, PS, PK, PKPWPS, YT, etc... This is very nice, as I have playlists based on serial number. And it makes sorting easier. I have a 20G iPod that I carry it all around on. Leaves me about 3.5 gigs for "other stuff" =D - -Brian On Thu, 6 May 2004, sanvara wrote: > Has anyone here transferred their entire Fax collection to a portable > player? It took about a month of casual ripping to finish. Its a real pain to go back and change all the assinine "Electronica/Dance" tags into something accurate, but goes fast enough when you're on a roll. For 90% of my collection - techno/dnb/downtempo/ambient, 224 sounds just like the original. Every once in a while I notice some degredation in the highs - stuff like the Cocteau Twins doesn't always sound perfect. But I'm not listening with reference speakers at work. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "sanvara" To: Sent: Thursday, May 06, 2004 12:59 PM Subject: (fax) Entire Fax collection in the palm of your hand > Has anyone here transferred their entire Fax collection to a portable > player? If you look closely, one is for Dreamfish and the other is for Dreamfish 2. That could be the partial explanation for the price difference. Dreamfish is a much more seminal album than Dreamfish 2 and it is much more difficult to find the original, so those prices seem to make some sick sort of 'sense'. Now, why anyone would pay that much money for ANY CD just to get its original cover art is totally beyond me, especially when perfectly good AW reiusses are available for $13... I'm like any other healthy completist and I would grab the original Dreamfish if I saw it for a decent price, but I'm pretty happy with my Rising High copy, even if the cover art is kinda corny.
