Let me start by saying I thought it was legit when I bought it and didn't really give it much thought. I guess the main reason was that I didn't think Spyra was someone who would merit such treatment. I hate Ars Nova and all of that, so I am disappointed to see that this may be along those lines. My package arrived on Thursday so I can describe the product for you. It's a CD, not a CDR, but the inner silver ring on the back has a logo that says "Discmakers." The front is blue and has a Ricochet Dream logo along with "All tracks composed, played and recorded by Wolfram DER Spyra. All rights reserved. No unauthorized copying or broadcasting." Here's the detailed track info from the inside of the booklet: 1. Level.Voice Recorded in 1986 using a voice-delay-loop and frugal recording units. Percussion played by Toxh. 2. Hush Hour (Excerpt 1) Excerpt from a composition for a sound installation, that was showed in a parking garage (daily from 6pm to 7pm) during the whole time of documenta 9, Kassel/Germany. Sax: Eric George 3. Wenn (2nd version, excerpt) Excerpt from the music for my performance "Wenn" (English "If"), Produzentengalerie Kassel, 1990. 4. Ormuzd Part of the music for the performance "Denkwuerdigkeiten eines Nervenkranken", (about Daniel Paul Schreber), Kassel, 1987. 5. Technische Etude 3/4 Recorded in 1991 as a "technical etude" to work in the musical application of the Atari-computer as a tape-synchronized MIDI-recorder 6. Hush Hour (Excerpt 2) Additional excerpt from the parking garage sound installation. 7. K 18 Live Live-piece played at the vernissage of the exhibition "HungerKunstHunger", 30.10.1991. The sound installation "Klangbleche" was used as loudspeakers. Recorded with two AKG C562 BL microphones. Processed voice: Christiane Winning 8. Back From The Roots Bonus Track... recorded in the early 90ies. Was not included on the original 1992 LTD 50 Edition MC release. As far as the sound quality is concerned, I have to say it's good. Doesn't sound like a cassette dubbed straight to CD (no audible hiss, etc). I would be very interested to find out if WdS has any knowledge or involvement in this venture. On one hand I'm happy to have it because I really enjoy what he does. On the other, I don't want to support people who are using his music to make money for themselves without his participation... This is definately NOT true. It has been re-issued in 2000 on Viktoriapark records label, J.S.'s own label! Also if you guys would explore the site a bit more (for example http://www.ricochetdream.com/poland.html) you can see an announce with a peformance by Wolfram DER Spyra on 11. September 2004 organised by Ricochet Dream. So it would be quite odd if they'd sell a bootleg CD of him. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Aug 2004 05:10:07 -0500 (CDT) From: Trevor Cordes Subject: Re: (fax) Spyra - weird CD on ebay On 31 Jul, Jonathan Lee wrote: > I suppose I should chime in at this point, or fess up, as it were, since > it looks like I'm the sole schmoe who bought this after it was listed > (but before this thread appeared). So the jury's hung on whether it's legit... but let's not forget the other side of the coin: is it any good? Since you have it, can you review/compare it for us? I've heard other band's "early unreleased" stuff (Jarre jumps to mind) and it's always kind of blah compared to their "hit" releases. I've always wondered why none of the big FAX guys (PK, MD, WdS...) seem to "lurk" on this list... If I was them I sure would, even if just to skim... or maybe they are...? ;-) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Aug 2004 05:14:40 -0500 (CDT) From: Trevor Cordes Subject: Re: (fax) Spyra - weird CD on ebay To expand on what I said regarding the Tangerine Dream releases on that Ricochet Dream site: those who follow TD know that they only release stuff on their own TDI label now (for the past -ish years?). Before that, AFAIK, the only labels they dealt with were Virgin, Castle, Mirimar, uh and one more that eludes me. I find it hard to believe that this weird label would suddenly get the rights to these concerts. Likewise, I find it hard to believe that any label the was partially illegit, would not be 100% illegit -- otherwise why risk it? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Aug 2004 12:33:35 +0200 From: Rene Brenner Subject: Re: (fax) Spyra - weird CD on ebay On Sun, Aug 01, 2004 at 05:14:40 -0500, Trevor Cordes wrote: > To expand on what I said regarding the Tangerine Dream releases on that > Ricochet Dream site: those who follow TD know that they only release > stuff on their own TDI label now (for the past -ish years?). The Bootleg Box is 100% legit (on Castle), all others are TDI releases. I don't know why there should be something wrong with the site. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Aug 2004 05:36:31 -0500 (CDT) From: Trevor Cordes Subject: Re: (fax) Spyra - weird CD on ebay On 1 Aug, Rene Brenner wrote: > > No illegit TD releases on the Ricochet Dream site. I thought the site looked like the releases were actual "Ricochet Dream" label releases, not simply reselling of other label releases. My mistake if that is the case... I'll have to go check out those titles more carefully as I had not heard of most of them yet and I follow TDI semi-regularly. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Aug 2004 09:30:02 -0700 From: Subject: Re: (fax) Spyra - weird CD on ebay "If there's one legit release on that site, I'll eat my hat. TD has gone downhill, but I think Jerome is finally starting to get the hang of it. Most of the new releases have at least one "good" track (plus lots of lame tracks). I expect soon there'll start being at least one "excellent" track and a couple of "good" tracks. The main bitch is that TDI CD's are bloody expensive! Unlike most people, I don't think Exit was their last good album. Many of the Melrose and Haslinger years albums are quite good. One of my all time faves is 220 Volt Live track 6 -- play that REALLY loud on a good (car?) stereo... trust me. Zlatko's(?) guitar is a bit too much, but otherwise flawless. Anyways, not very fax-y, so I'll leave it at that. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Aug 2004 07:48:56 +0200 (CEST) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?motone?= Subject: Re: (fax) FA: OCTOPUS 2 Hi again, I added some shipping info to the OCTOPUS 2 auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4027488763 or http://tinyurl.com/5tas8 BTW, I decided to sell my whole FAX and RI collection, to buy some more music gear ;-).
